Think on your own life and your challenges. No matter how difficult and dark an experience that has occurred their is always something of positive value that comes from it. There always is a silver lining.

It is in these times of struggle that Spirit is very much with us. Our soul is constant communication with the Creator working for our highest good. We just need to still the mind and pay attention to what's happening. It's easy to want a distraction to distance ourselves from the pain we are feeling, but if we just allow we can begin our healing once we understand and accept the issue.

I've had the opportunity to follow up with clients later. It always fascinates me how much good can come out of a bad situation and to hear about how the experience brought them to a better place always is a joy to hear. Like a phoenix, something fiery and wonderful can arise from the ashes!

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; Unfortunately I have discovered that I have been doing much more preaching than practicing. I spend many hours with clients talking about the joys of taking time for yourself to love yourself and heal. I have done hours of chakra healing and have been honored with assisting clients to heal themselves in some miraculous ways. However how many hours have I taken for my own healing?

I make up the usual excuses. I don't have time or resources. It's not that important, someday I will get to caring for myself but right now that doesn't work for me. Nonsense! I can't be an effective healer for others if I don't take time for my own healing. Any negatived energy I am carrying from my own life affects my clients. Fortunately I belong to healer group where we do take time to heal each other at least once a week, but intuitively I am driven to seek out more. If I feel that, then I need to follow my instincts. This is another thing that I "preach".

A large part of doing healing work is tapping into that universal love that surrounds us all. A healer (and we are ALL healers to one degree or another) channels this love when assisting others. However, if you are not experiencing that love yourself, you are blocking that flow. This throws your own life off kilter and makes it more difficult to be of use to other people. By getting your own ducks in a row first, you can help others with their ducks.

So ask yourself that question, are you taking the time to care for yourself?

Duncan Metzger is an intuitive medium, soul coach, and chakra healer. It was a day where healers, psychics and many other integrative wellness workers gathered to provide their services pro bono to people in the community who would not be able to afford it. I had an opportunity first hand to hear some of the stories of people that were going through some very difficult passages of their lives and they were coming to me for answers as to where they were headed with an intuitive reading.

When I work with my clients, my type of reading is not the predictive kind where I declare something will happen in x amount of time. This kind of reading can be very dis-empowering for many people as they feel they are at the mercies of the Universe and their future is set in stone that an event will occur. Neither of these ideas are true. If the expected event is perceived by the client as positive it is still dis-empowering as they may feel they can sip their coffee and put their feet on an ottoman and it's "just going to happen". Everything in this life that is worth having requires some footwork from the participant. You co-create with the Universe, not sit idly by.

The kind of reading I do is a what I sometimes call a "soul snapshot". I look at what is happening in their lives today, what brought them there, and where things are headed given how things are today. Life coaching plays a large part as I offer suggestions on actions the client can do in order to help them heal themselves which more likely puts them towards a favorable outcome with the events in their lives. That way the client is much more in the driver seat, which is the way it should be.

The clients I saw that day were going through varying degrees of difficulties in their lives. The subjects of their difficulties were varied as well including financial, health, relationships and familial challenges. The common thread I saw is that the reason things have become difficult is that there is a personal growth experience that needs to happen. My tarot cards reflected this reality with each reading, and I know from personal experience that every time I had challenges in my own life was that there was something in my own growth I needed to pay attention to.

When things in our life are going "swimmingly" there is little motivation to implement change in our lives. After all it's like the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" When problems arise we don't like it and wish to get away from it. There are two ways we can do that. One is by avoidance. Avoidance can manifest through ignoring the issue, pursuing addictions of all kinds (including supposed "healthy addictions" such as working, physical activity and socializing which I will address with another posting), or becoming despondent and depressed. The other way is to address that pain, and honor it by looking on a higher level to see what needs to be addressed, and to start the healing process through a shift in attitude. When we shift our attitude and outlook, actions need to follow in order to move forward.

In the mean time the period of change or transition is not pretty. It's not meant to be. If you ever have seen a remodeling of a home in the middle of the process, generally it looks worse than before the work ever began! That is the way we feel when we are in the middle of our growth. We wish things were like they were before we were in the transitory phase. Even if things were dysfunctional, at least there was comfort and familiarity in that dysfunction. When you are in transition period, likewise you are being remodeled. Sometimes that involves knocking out foundation that has been around for many years (sometimes since childhood) which is very disruptive to our livelihood. When that remodeling will be completed is on God's time, but you have a large part in that working with Source is about co-creating. Depending on how you involve yourself you can find yourself with a beautiful new structure or a half-built mess. It's up to you!

Duncan Metzger is an intuitive medium, life coach, and chakra healer. You are in close proximity with other people that you didn't choose to be with for long stretches of time over the week. Sometimes you spend more time with these people than your own family. You most likely try to spend the most time with people you are most drawn to when you socialize at work, but many times you have engage with people that really fray your nerves because it's required as a course of doing business. If it's your boss, well it can be really challenging as your fight or flight response wants to kick in and guess what? It might be a career detrimental move if you chose either of those options, (Well the flight might be an option, just don't run screaming out the door, follow some protocol please!)

You do have other options however. You can't control them as a person, but you can help change a difficult situation by channeling positive energy into the situation. Where you start this work is on yourself. You need to bring your vibration higher so that you may more effectively deal with the situation and not become mired in the negativity. Take a candid look at yourself and ask yourself how you are contributing to the conflict or negative situation? Most people wish to shift the blame entirely on the other party, but that is never true. If you have difficulty seeing this, one thing I recommend to my clients is to ask yourself this question when you are in a deep meditative state when you put aside your ego and are much more aligned with your higher self. The answer to questions like this will come with practice. Once you take ownership of your side of the street, you are taking back your power. You are no longer a victim to the other person being the "bad guy".

Now imagine how you would like to see your working relationship with this person. When you imagine this, make it as real as possible in your mind. How would you like to see yourself acting and feeling when dealing with this other individual? When you put your focus on how you would like things to be instead of how "awful" they currently are, your energy shifts and not only will you act differently around this person, but you actually send out much more positive energy. The other person will feel the difference as we are all inherently intuitive on some level. You change your side of the equation and inevitably the relationship will shift. The person may not like the change as many people dislike or are afraid of change. It may feel like it worsens the situation before it gets better. If you persist in doing this however things will shift to their highest good. The highest good is not necessarily that everything goes your direction with this other person, but what works out to be the best balance for both parties or the situation as a whole.

Another exercise I suggest is that when you know you are going to have a difficult meeting or confrontation with a coworker or boss is to prepare for it ahead of time. Put yourself in a meditative state perhaps the night before and imagine that other person sitting before you. Imagine each other bathed in the white light of Spirit as you converse. Always remember that even the most difficult person is still as much a child of God as you are. Imagine what you would like to tell them in your side of things. Now imagine what they would like to say to you. Is there a reasonable compromise between both sides? Put that intention out there. Don't forget to ask Spirit to bring in the highest good. Two things occur when you do this. One when you meet with that person you will feel much less afraid or antagonistic and you will feel the wind of Spirit at your back. The other thing is that souls do communicate with each other outside of the physical 3D world. You literally are reaching out to other person in Universal consciousness and putting your disagreement into a higher light! When you do meet will you get everything you want? No, but things will go much smoother and it won't be the nightmare your fearful mind can create about it. I've used this techniques in my own dealings and it's amazing how it works!

Duncan Metzger is an intuitive medium, energy healer, life coach and writer. His website is http://www.northernlightworker.com. He can be reached at Duncan@northernlightworker.com

He also a co-owner of The Healing Loft in Minneapolis, MN

Workplace Spirituality Series: Shine Your Light!

Everyone is trying to accomplish something big, not realizing that life is made up of little things.
Frank A. Clark - American writer (1911-1991) "The Country Parson"

Last week I discussed finding motivation in the workplace, and the challenges of that in these difficult times. http://northernlightworker.blogspot.com/2010/08/workplace-spirituality-series-wheres.html I discussed some issues that are all too common in workplaces in recessionary times. The key ingredient to these issues is fear, which is very understandable when there is the energy of scarcity all around you. This week I would like to discuss some suggestions to help you find something to edge fear out and bring in the power of Spirit to bring happiness within and to protect yourself from what's happening without.

When we operating in fear we are not effective. Every action is guarded and defensive. You don't feel free to make bold decisions as you are risk-aversive to the results. You end up licking your finger and putting it to the wind to find out which way the wind is blowing and your decisions are based on safety rather than what is in your heart. Of course you need to do that, you need to preserve your job! Wrong!

Most of fears power derives from perception. Monitor your thoughts carefully, maybe even write down what you are thinking. Look over what you have written down. What is the actual likelihood of anything you wrote down occurring. One thing that might be helpful is to assign a numeric value to it ranking it by the likelihood that it actually would occur. This may seem to simplistic, but what you are doing is taking the perception and bringing it closer to what is reality. You are also taking a step at managing your situation and gaining empowerment over it. You don't always have the power to change what is going on around you, but you always have the opportunity for self-mastery and this is much more powerful than you may think!

If you did the last exercise you have a better idea of what your true situation is. Raising yourself to a more positive vibration is done in steps, and is not an overnight process. That's the beautiful part though, there are steps and the steps are not overwhelming!

Ask yourself these questions now, what would I like my work environment to look like? What would I be accomplishing? What kind of role would I play or person would I be? Here is the most important question of all, how would that feel if I had all that? Close your eyes and feel that feeling for a moment. How do you feel? Congratulations you just raised your "light"! You might be saying to yourself, "Isn't that just my imagination? That's all fantasy crap right?" True, you did come up with that in your mind. However your mind is very powerful. The more you hold on to that feeling the more you act and behave like the person you want to become and that light shines out and the Universe responds. You will end up in that spot that you imagined. This is called manifesting. You have much more power than you believe.

Will you have that dream job overnight? Possibly. It has happened. More likely though there are steps to get there, and get there you will if you honestly feel and believe you will. It will inevitably help you in your current job situation in the meantime because you learn to accept if you are not happy where you are, eventually it will change. You just need to manifest for the future, but also remain present in the moment and not let fear deter you from your goals.

Getting back to your current job situation, next week I will address one of the number one stress producers of people in the workforce. That stress producer is dealing with difficult people. There are ways to work with Spirit to bring peace and harmony into even the most difficult of situations. You have angels and guides that are itching to work with you. I'll gladly share what I know, and yes it has worked beautifully for me!

Blessings,

Duncan

Next week: Workplace Spirituality Series: My Coworkers Are Driving Me Crazy!

Workplace Spirituality Series: Where's the motivation?

Office Space (1999)

Peter Gibbons: The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
Bob Porter: Don't... don't care?
Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime, so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

Everywhere you turn currently, it seems like the talk inevitably turns toward our economy being in a recession. Much of the conversation turns to how many people are out of work. That fact is true, many people are out of work. What I'd like to address though is the people who are blessed to be working, but are feeling the stress of a depressed economy. What can those folks do to defray some of the frustration that they may be feeling?

In times of a strong economy, if you are in a work environment that doesn't challenge or is rewarding to you, there is always the option to change jobs and find a environment that is more supportive of your success. Your motivation is job satisfaction and financial stability, and by learning more skills, networking with more people, and applying for more challenging positions or by seeking promotion you can readily do that. In a difficult economy, this may seem very difficult or even impossible in some cases. You now feel trapped, and it seems that the competition is so fierce for jobs that you feel like the very job you possess is endangered, and with the continued layoffs perhaps it is. Now you are motivated by fear and are in a defensive position. If you are living in this fear, it takes it's toll on your health and well-being.

Fear is a poor motivator! Studies have shown that positive reinforcement is a much more effective motivator than negative reinforcement. Also when you are in a state of fear it elevates the "fight or flight" mechanism, and most likely neither of those are an option, and you end up bottling that up inside causing the body to manifest stress-related illnesses. Your energy becomes ungrounded as the hamster in your head frantically runs on the wheel as you think about the possibility of losing of your job and how you will financially survive should that happen. Your chakras become severely imbalanced. Even your posture becomes affected and you might walk with a hunch which communicates fear and defensiveness. Does this maybe seem familiar to you?

The fact is fear perpetrates nothing but more fear. Your fear of losing your job, or the feeling of being trapped in your current work situation because you feel you don't have any options does nothing for you. Fear is valuable only in the face of physical danger, and even then people override it and do some amazingly brave acts. There is a good side to all this. Really there is. Fear is just a perception, albeit a very a strong one. I'm not going to tell you to just get "rid of it". Not only is this simplistic, but even if you actually could do that it would leave a vacuum and come right back. What I will suggest is raising your energy and vibration to a more positive one slowly, but surely you will notice the difference. I will discuss this more next week!

Next week: Workplace Spirituality Series: Shine your light!

Being humble: It's not what you think...

When you hear the word "Humility" what do you usually think? We are always told that having humility is a noble quality to have. However the meaning of the word is many times misconstrued. It does not mean you are meek, quiet, and lacking pride. It means that the power of Spirit works through you, but you are not Spirit alone.

You have a beautiful relationship with Spirit which is infinite! In fact you are part of Spirit, and humility is about having a firm understanding of this relationship. You understand there is a Divine energy and in this life you align yourself with this energy and wonderful things happen. As you align yourself and allow giving and receiving you are using the Source to create things in your life, in others lives, in your community and to affect the planet. You weren't meant to be ashamed of this power, you were meant to harness it!

When people are in discussions about humility, inevitably the talk turns to humility meaning a lack of pride. Pride is not a bad thing at all. Pride is about feeling good about yourself as a person, your actions, and your achievements. Allow yourself permission to be proud of yourself. It is from this good feeling you feel the positive energy to go out and accomplish more. When people think of pride as negative, what they really are referring to is "false pride" which has nothing to with true "pride". "False pride" is feeling that you are somehow a better person or that what your life's work, achievements or even the material items you posses somehow make you superior to someone else. Other people are just as much a part of Spirit as you are. There is no separation, it is we who differentiate. They are on a different path and are experiencing different things than you in this life, that is the only difference.

Being humble also means that you were not meant to go it alone. You realize that there is a creative intelligence that you were meant to work with to help achieve your goals. The power of prayer and meditation is immense. Spirit also comes in the form of the people around you. If you don't have the wherewithal to do something, there are people who can, and you should allow them to come into your life when they find you. We all came into this world with different skills and abilities. We were meant to work with each other in Spirit. If we were meant to do everything alone, why we would all have the same gifts, all of them!

Humility is about understanding our limitations, being proud of who we are, and taking the energy of Spirit to co-create a happy and productive life. It's about walking in the sunshine of the Spirit and having the awareness that being a human being is nothing small at all as we are connected to something of infinite possibilities!

Creating positive energy from a challenging present.

When you are having a difficult time do you find yourself being extremely annoyed with people saying, "Be Positive!"? You might even groan when you hear that. It's not easy to be positive when you find little to be positive about. You may find yourself in dire financial situations, having issues with a significant other or wishing you even had a significant other, legal dilemmas, hating your current job, displeasure at your home environment, familial entanglement, or just a gnawing vague dissatisfaction at everything! You may feel completely helpless to bring about change in your situation. You just keep thinking about what is "wrong" about your life, your environment, the people who annoy you, your fears, your health issues, and your resentments and you focus your energy upon it.

This is the real issue however. Where your focus is. The Law of Attraction states that the Universe will respond to that which we focus our attention upon. If you are focusing all your attention on the negative, then the Universe will say "Ok, Jane really must want what's happening in her life, let's continue sending it her way."

We need to shift our energy to what we want in our life and not what we don't want. However this gets back to the "Be Positive!" statement of our friend earlier in the blog. When we are the midst of something that is difficult, it's very hard not to think about our challenges. The irony is that in order to create change for ourselves for the future, we need to be grateful and love ourselves where we are at in the present moment.

There are many things to be grateful for. Write down all the things that you appreciate in your life. If you have a favourite food that you enjoy eating, by all means write it down! What parts of yourself do you enjoy and appreciate? Do you have a fabulous sense of humour? Fantastic! What you will find is yourself feeling better, you are shifting your energy in a positive direction. It takes the work and action of doing this to make it all happen. You are changing your state of being to be positive. Maybe our friend in the first paragraph was on to something!

There is more to this however. I want you to truly appreciate your present life. Write down all the most difficult and challenging things that are happening in your life. Use your imagination and put yourself in a place where it is a far enough time to have some sort of emotional detachment from the issue. (If it is very severe and you never see yourself as really being detached, have faith that you could find peace. Many people say they will never stop being angry or sad over something in their lives, and later find that beautiful inner wisdom to find they really can!) What valuable lessons would you think these could offer us? Don't contemplate how you want them to change, write about how they are now and how does it help you? No experience we have is 100% positive or negative. In fact the very judgment of whether it is positive or negative comes from our perception. On the Universe level it is just that, another experience on your spiritual path with no sentiments attached.

What you have now done is truly appreciate all your life, not just what you consider "positive". We aren't half people, we are whole people. Love your whole being and your whole life. You will be in a much better place to manifest and create the life you want for yourself.

Blessings! Hostile people live in a hostile world. Same world. ~ Dr. Wayne Dyer

There are too many people who believe life on earth is something to be endured. Something that they need to "go through" to receive their reward in heaven. There are others who believe they are not long for this world as they are far too delicate to endure the harsh realities of it, and want to "home". I don't lend credibility to either of these views. I firmly believe this world is "heaven" and "home" just as much as the other side is when we cross over.

I recently was reminded of this when I was visiting my friend Bel Marshall in the Pacific Northwest. When I was out there I witnessed some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. It was nothing short of breathtaking. One that will stick with me is visiting the lighthouse in Cape Disappointment in Southern Washington State. There was a fine mist that hung amongst the towering evergreens and the air smelled cool and fresh as we walked along the trail high above the ocean swell crashing on the rocks below. The scene seemed surreal, yet it was very real and I felt very grounded that day.

We came upon a fawn along the trail. The deer is the animal totem I most strongly identify, and I felt drawn to it. I expected that it would scamper away but it didn't. It kept looking at me keenly. We continued walking and it would walk several feet ahead of us. Occasionally we would stop and snap photographs of the verdant scenery around us. And strangely enough she would stop too and forage in the grass on the side of the path. I started snapping pictures of her. She would walk when we walked and stop when we stopped. One last time she stood beside us on the path and I snapped some photos. She decided to saunter off casually into the woods. Later looking at the photograph she was surrounded by orbs. Intuitively I felt it was angel energy surrounding the deer. The question occurred, was it really a deer or Spirit in the form of a deer symbolically letting me know She was accompanying me on my journey?

Our world is indeed a beautiful place. And the home for 7 billion souls. Many people have the belief that angels and spiritual deities are off in some far off place. People will discuss injustice, crime, squalor, greed, violence, sadness, anger, disgust, and pain. They will say that this world is a cruel place. Does it have to be though? When you put these thoughts out they carry out to Source, and Source responds by giving us these things. She doesn't differentiate whether we consider these things to be positive or negative, She just responds. So what occurs is that we have a world of our own making.

There are others though who decided that they would like to have a world that reflects the heaven that they know it should be. These people seem to be happy. They are following their bliss and truly reaping what they sow. The work with their angels and guides and they respond accordingly. Angels are right here with us, only at a harmonic vibration that makes it so it is not easily apparent they are here, but if you open yourself up, you will know they are there. Ask for signs and they will respond with something tangible for you to see. You don't need to cross over to see this. It's hear and it's now. Enjoy it!

If everyone truly believed that this was heaven on earth, then it would be. The hopeful thing is I am observing more and more people embracing Spirit as our energies ascend as a world people. There will be positive change if this momentum keeps continuing. So monitor your thoughts. What are you putting your focus on? Ask the angels around you for guidance, and see what happens! Create your heaven place on earth!

Helping others where it is most needed

For most of us part of our soul journey is to give assistance and receive assistance from other people. All of us have something we can share to enrich the life of other another person. This can be in the form of personal experience, skills of all kinds, character strengths, our labors, our knowledge, leadership, or sometimes all that's needed is loving understanding. It gives us a sense of purpose and belonging in humanity. As we are a part of that, so other people are too, and they help us. The energy and efforts of everyone is not a one-for-one benefit, but multiplied many times.

However we are limited in the time we have in a day. We only are able to do so much. So as much as we would like to, you are not able to help everyone. Many people have a hard time with this. It is difficult to say no to people. In many cases people who with regularity prioritize their tasks for the day suddenly find it challenging to decide who is most "deserving" of their time and efforts. The fact is that it's not a matter of "deserving" but more a matter of will you effectively help that person, and are you the right person for the job?

Let's focus on the emotional help. When someone approaches you with an issue, are they really wanting your help, or are they looking for a receptacle for their negative energy? Many times people will state they want your guidance on issues, but in reality they really want to give you a blow by blow description of their negative experience, and really do not want to move forward. This shows a lack of appreciation of your time. Pay attention to this. Often times we are more than willing to tolerate behavior from others that we would never dream of doing with other people. Check your gut on this. Is this person being respectful of your boundaries? Do you feel good after conversing with them that your were able to help them, or do feel drained of your energy?

When you have a later conversation with this person, do they tell you that they employed some of the suggestions you have offered? If so then they are reachable and open to suggestion. You have the comfort of knowing that this person respects your opinion and truly is benefiting from your energy, not taking your energy. If you are truly reaching out and helping that person you will feel energized. You become a channel for Spirit and you are feeling the energy of the Universe.

Many of us, especially people in the lightworker field, feel uncomfortable saying no to people or maintaining our boundaries. We want to help everyone as we are compassionate people. However, we really can't help everyone, it's impossible! We must say no to some people, so we have the time and resources to spend with those who are receptive. Trying to save everyone is very ego driven, and an impossibility. Our emotions and energy can guide us to the people who would be best served. This is Spirit driven. By taking our light, and lighting another we light up the world!

Finding your balance and achieving wholeness

I currently am visiting my family and spending a week in Vail. For me being in the womb of the Rocky Mountains is a spiritually uplifting experience. When I look over the peaks and the vistas I feel such a strong connection to the divine experience of Mother Earth. I feel grounded. I feel that one of the reasons it draws me is that if you were to look into my natal chart, I lack a lot of earth energies. So what I am intuitively doing is seeking balance. When I have balance I can truly become whole and utilize all energies. A four legged stool will not stand properly unless all the legs are of the same length. And so it would be natural to seek equity within yourself.

In your own life, are there places that you go and feel connected to Spirit? Think on that. If you are attracted to oceans you may lack water energies, if you seek hot places you may lack fire. And if we were to extrapolate, look at your friends. If you tend to be the quiet type, you may have a fiery Leo or Aries friend that you are attracted to because of what you lack. We all come into this world with different energy levels in different areas. The good news is that through picking up energy from other people and places we can fire up the energy centers where we are lacking.

I believe that Spirit didn't create us with all our energy centers at 100% for a reason. We lack in some areas so we would be forced to seek out our balance and have challenges in the process. And with these challenges comes spiritual growth and opening up the connection with Source. For myself it was that grounding earth energy. I watched a storm blow through the valley and yet the sun was shining brightly. The most beautiful rainbow appeared before me. I felt myself very plugged into source at that very moment, and this only occurred as I was balanced.

In tarot decks, the temperance card means balance. Many decks show a pentacle, a sword, a wand, and a cup on the illustration which represents earth, air, fire, and earth respectively. The major arcana of tarot decks contains strong spiritual elements. And balance is a very powerful theme always. What are you doing today to balance yourself? Find your spiritual place or loved ones that lend that energy to help you find that within yourself.
